Message from the Head of School

I recently read an article in a journal about Jewish organizations, in which the following appeared: “The Jewish people are commanded to flourish from generation to generation.” Then the question becomes, “Who is this next generation?”
My answer is the students attending The High School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy.
Spend a few moments with our students, and you’ll see why I am so proud. I would love to sing the praises of each and every one, but that would be impossible. So I’ll share a few examples with you. These include the accomplishments of Student Council President Zachary Herbert. Although he is a high school senior, his resume rivals that of many professionals. He has applied to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and will find out mid-December about his acceptance. Among his other choices for post-secondary education are Harvard University, Princeton University, and Yale University. His achievements as a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist and AP Scholar with Honor, athletic talents on the soccer field, and commitment to giving back to others through a program that refurbishes computers for the needy are commendable beyond words.
Zach's classmates and friends, Student Council Vice President Adam Orshan (National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, AP Scholar with Honor) and Stacey Berkowitz (AP Scholar), join him as outstanding students. Adam's college choices include Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, Washington University (St. Louis), the University of Miami, the University of Florida, Emory University, Tulane University, and Northwestern University. He aspires to be a neurosurgeon. Stacey hopes to attend the University of Pennsylvania, Tufts University, Carnegie-Mellon University or Emory University, where she plans to major in chemistry and English. Zach, Adam, and Stacey had exceptional SAT scores. The list of possibilities for “the next generation” is too great to put into words. For that, we should all be proud.
"Without a doubt, we expect to continue to hear great things about Zach, Adam, Stacey (shown at left), and all of our graduates. Armed with a DKJA education, they have the tools and foundation they will need to succeed in college and beyond," said Mandee Heller Adler of International College Counselors.
I am sure you will undoubtedly concur that we produce the Jewish future. We now have proof that with a Jewish education through twelfth grade, which includes not only exemplary academics, but strong community service, our young adults leave us ready to be successful. This success follows them to the universities and colleges which they select, as they continue on to graduate school, in their careers, and in life.
As the Head of Donna Klein Jewish Academy, I am so proud of these accomplishments.
Shabbat Shalom,
Karen Feller

Lower School Highlights
By Mrs. Amy Kamber
Kindergarten Team Leader
Konnichiwa! The kindergarten students spent the past month learning about Japan and Japanese culture. They learned about Japanese families, schools, foods, games, animals, origami, and even how to speak some simple Japanese phrases. The whole grade also came together to hear a traditional kamishibi story. After completing many art projects and learning how to eat with chopsticks with the help of our Japanese intern, Chihiro, the unit culminated with a “walk-about.” On Tuesday morning, each class went from room to room to work on four projects. At the end of the session, they each had made a Japanese rock garden, candy sushi, a t-shirt kimono and an uchiwa fan. At the end of the day, we were lucky to have Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Louis (Sophia’s mom and dad from K-109) come in to share their knowledge of Japan. They taught us how to bow, say “sorry,” and showed us a great presentation that taught us about the seasons and included a video of Sophia at a Japanese festival in Japan. Arigato to the Louis family! Sayonara!
Middle School Highlights
By Tova Fischtein, High School Hebrew Teacher
This past week, the accelerated middle school Hebrew class had a chance to experience their curriculum in a very special way.
On Wednesday, they played a game that is very popular in Israel on our school campus. The skills needed to play the game re necessary for them to comprehend their last story of their current book before they move on to their new book. Through the game, they read notes that their teacher left for them throughout the campus and executed tasks that were assigned to them, including writing a song about friendship and performing it in front of the class.
On Thursday, in order to learn about “Achvat Lochamim,” the special bond between Israeli soldiers, two DKJA fathers volunteered to come and tell the students about their IDF experience. Mr. Haddad served in the north during the Lebanon war, and he brought a friend who served with him during this war in a unit that followed Mr. Haddad’s unit. Through his stories, we made the connection to parent Mr. Tilayoff’s unit (he served in the Israeli intelligence unit).
The students got a glimpse of the strong friendships that are created during such times. I was very proud of their level of understanding.
DKJA Celebrates Red Ribbon Week
DKJA Celebrates Red Ribbon Week The Red Ribbon Campaign began as a symbol of intolerance toward the use of drugs. Last week, fifth and eighth grade students had the opportunity to hear speakers from the Living in the Schools Skills Program offered through the Crossroads Club of Delray Beach. The goals of this program are to help students understand the impact of peer pressure, family and community relationships and the consequences of their behavior, as well as to recognize the rewards of choosing a substance-free lifestyle. The sharing of these youthful presenters’ experiences with substance abuse, misfortunes that occurred as a result of their addiction, and their ensuing recovery, led to extremely effective question-and-answer sessions. Both students and the faculty who had an opportunity to hear the speakers reported that it was a very valuable and rewarding experience.
Students in sixth and seventh grade had the opportunity to listen to a speaker from the Lungs 4 Life Program offered through the American Lung Association. Students learned factual and important information about the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, anti-tobacco, and risks involving the abuse of inhalants, marijuana as well as other illegal drugs. Though the power point was at times graphic in nature, the students were extremely engaged and intrigued to learn about the effects of smoking on the body. Their questions were insightful and demonstrated their understanding of these dangerous habits.

High School Highlights
Judaic Studies classes (one group from eleventh and one from twelfth grade) heard a presentation by Rabbi Marc Rosenstein, who is involved with the Masorati movement in Israel and the Zionist Organization of Conservative Judaism. An American by birth, Rabbi Rosenstein talked about his first trip to Israel as a tenth-grader and how it impacted on his decision to change his career path from a scientist to a Jewish educator, and his subsequent aliyah to Israel. He described the moshav where he lives on in the Galilee, and how he works with groups of Jewish and Arab students to help create understanding and trust through the creation of a circus.
